In the middle 1970's having abandoned synthetic materials because of their toxicity, Bill turned his attention to the rennovation of his old creamery in Bodega and to the duties of being a professor and chairman of the art department at Sonoma State University. It was at this time that Bill's paintings turned to the playful and lyrical. Words and images gained equal importance in all aspects of his work. His love of allegory resulted in a series that made direct reference to both his personal and academic lives. With a painter's vocabulary and his love of poetry and literature, he delighted in investigating the world in which he lived both cliche and profound.
